How Green Tea can Help you Lose Weight : Over the past few years, green tea has gone viral as a health icon and miracle herb. It is now one of the first things that pop to mind when someone asks for or mentions a healthy diet, and rightfully so. Green tea is known for so many different health benefits, many of which no other food can claim to have. Also, many users and even experts claim it as the healthiest thing they can think of to drink. The most famous of these benefits, one that is most famous for being used as a propaganda in green tea commercials, is weight-loss. There are people that say that this is true, and then there are those who claim it’s false and it didn’t help them what so ever. Which of these is true, and which false? As always I will play devils’ advocate and argue from both sides of the topic to come to the truth.
Green tea is known to ‘helps because loss of weight in our body. People will argue that they have had green tea, and it didn’t cause any change, but they forget that the key word in the above statement is ‘help.’ Just drinking green tea will not lose all the fat in your body, it will directly help. To be precise let’s get to the science behind it all. Green tea is full of a compound known as catechin, which is a potent source of antioxidants. It also contains Epigallocatechin gallate, or better known as EGCG, which increases metabolism. This increase in metabolism helps the body burn fat faster, and caffeine content in it further intensifies this effect. This activation of beneficial substances is the reason that green tea is known to help reduce weight and fat, but this works well only when you are doing something to burn the fat in the first place. To keep it clear let’s break down on how green tea helps manage fat.
How Green Tea can Help you Lose Weight
Green tea helps with weight loss because it helps decrease abdominal fat, and also some other fat in general. This theory has been tested on 240 people, at research in Penn States’ College of Agriculture Sciences, for 12 weeks and all of them showed significant changes such as body fat percentages, weight, and reduced abdominal circumferences. This and several other research programs prove green tea effects. However (How Green Tea can Help you Lose Weight), do keep in mind that you cannot usually see this weight loss very much on the scale. Let me explain this phenomenon further; there are two types of fats in our body; subcutaneous (fat that resides under the skin) and visceral (internal fat that lives around organs). Visceral fat is considered to be dangerous of the two, and coincidentally also the one that green tea helps burn. The increase in metabolism due to green tea helps burn the fat as well as push it into the bloodstream so that it can be converted into energy. This is good because too much visceral fat is known to cause inflammation, insulin resistance, heart disease, and even type 2 diabetes. A compound named polyphenol also exists in green tea. This complex helps with the oxidation of fat cells, making it easier for them to convert food into calories and use them. There have been studies that show signs of just having green tea lowering levels of fat, and there have been studies that show no signs of this. This is because each is different with a different metabolic rate, so the effects of green tea changes from person to person. However, for the proper burning of fat, it has been shown in general that you need to drink approximately 6-7 glasses of green tea every day, which is unreasonable and unhealthy as well as it is a carrier of caffeine. So it is highly advised to take 2-3 cups a day instead, one cup before every meal, and add proper diet and exercise to your schedule instead.

Like mentioned above, green tea works best when put together with other forms of weight loss activities such as exercise. The increase in metabolic rate causes increased burning of fat, and although the particular percentage of this varies (some say only 2% increase in burning and some even say up to 17% increase), most agree that it helps to some extent. It is even said that this ‘boost’ that your metabolism gets continues even after the workout is stopped. In other words, when the exercise is started your body starts burning calories faster due to the combined effort of the workout and green tea, but even when you stop the workout, this high rate of burning calories continues till long after. Over a period, your overall metabolic rate becomes faster and stays that way even if you don’t keep the green tea or exercise.
Your diet is critical in this process of losing weight. If you eat a lot of calories and fat, but drink green tea, it will not help the body at all. Green tea can only help manage a small portion of the fat entering your body, so controlling your diet in this process is crucial.
There is a type of metabolism your body has that is known as resting metabolism. This is the rate at which your body burns fat while in sleeping mode, which means while doing nothing. This rate is known to increase the consumption of green tea. In other words, it is like having a high protein diet, a diet that makes your body work so hard to digest that it causes the loss of calories. So even while at a state of rest your body will burn fat at a high rate. Again there are different sides to this story where some claim that it didn’t do anything for them, while others say their metabolic rate raised 3 – 8%, and their are a select few who even state that their price kept increasing even if they stopped taking green tea after a while. To know which one is right for you, you are going to have to try the tea yourself!
Now we talked about how green tea increases metabolism, but there is another thing it does to prevent the growth of fat. We all have a hormone known as Norepinephrine which is responsible for sending the signal that releases lipids from fat cells. As discussed before, green tea has a compound in it called EGCG. This EGCG stops the big problem at the root itself by preventing the production of an enzyme. This protein is necessary because it reduces the action of the hormone Norepinephrine.
So it is very much true that green tea helps reduce fat and weight, but because each and every individual has their rate of metabolism, stamina, energy, and so many other things that make up who we are, so the amount of exercise, dieting, and extra effort you must put along with the green tea completely depends on you. I highly recommend trying different types, styles, and quantities of green tea along with changing workout routines or diet schedules. Otherwise, there are many more benefits that come from green tea, and certainly no harm as long as you keep the intake in limits.
